The Platters - More Encore of Golden Hits
The Platters was one of the most successful vocal groups of the early rock and roll era. Their distinctive sound was a bridge between the pre-rock Tin Pan Alley tradition and the burgeoning new genre. The act went through several personnel changes, with the most successful incarnation comprising lead tenor Tony Williams, David Lynch, Paul Robi, Herb Reed, and Zola Taylor. The group had 40 charting singles on the Billboard Hot 100 chart between 1955 and 1967, including four no. 1 hits.
AllMusic Review by Ron Wynn
There were many greatest hits collections and anthologies issued featuring The Platters in the '70s. Polygram did a horrible job for years of maintaining the catalog, and various bootleg, import, and low-budget compilations flooded the market. Polygram finally did the group justice a few years ago with a deluxe two-disc set covering their great hits. That's the set to get if you want a comprehensive Plattersanthology. This is long out of print, but it contained some good B-sides and tracks from their '50s and early '60s sessions.
